Welcome, “Citizen Paulo.”

Yesterday afternoon in the Lehigh County District Court in Allentown, a crowd of friends and supporters witnessed our friend, parishioner and volunteer, Paulo Pereira take the oath of allegiance which completed his incorporation as a Citizen of the United States of America. In this touching ceremony, Paulo, along with candidates from 25 other countries, pledged to “support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic; and to bear true faith and allegiance to the same.” Today we will celebrate in a more informal way at the Soup Kitchen. We give thanks for the gift of Paulo, for his presence among us, and for the many wonderful ways in which he has made a positive and lasting contribution to our family. Here is the link to the photos from the courthouse.

Here is the full text of the Oath of Alleigance: “I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen; that I will support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I will bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform noncombatant service in the Armed Forces of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform work of national importance under civilian direction when required by the law; and that I take this obligation freely without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; so help me God.”
