Where do the Ashes come from?

Did you ever wonder where the ashes come from which are used on Ash Wednesday? They are “recycled” from the previous Palm Sunday. Parishioners are invited to bring them to church and they will be burned to prepare for the “imposition of ashes on the forehead” on Ash Wednesday. This year, you are invited to bring your palms to the 10:30 a.m. liturgy on Sunday, February 11. 2018.

This prayer reminds us of the meaning and significance of the ashes which will be used to invite us to a holy Lent:

“Blessed God, whose child, Jesus, walked the path of suffering and death
in order to open to us the gates of everlasting life:
with the burning of these palms,
make us mindful that all worldly triumph turns to dust,
and all earthly joy is mingled with sorrow,
yet through Christ, even at the grave we make our song
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!”
